Applicants for Corrections Deputy are required to pass a video based scenario, reading section and report writing examination and pass a physical fitness test through National Testing Network.

Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the video, reading and report writing sections of the written exam. Applicant must pass the report writing section and the physical fitness test. The Physical Fitness Test includes: a mile and a half run, push-ups and sit-ups.

Based upon the results of the National Testing Network scores, applicants will be ranked and placed on a civil service employment register. Applicants who rank high on the civil service register will be selected to undergo a comprehensive pre-employment background investigation.

As the second largest sheriff’s department in Washington State, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has 312 patrol deputies who serve a rural and urban landscape covering 1,806 square miles. Additionally, 281 corrections deputies maintain the safety of the community by supervising approximately 1100 inmates in two facilities as well as providing for the movement between the Pierce County Corrections Detention Center and the courts.

With Mt. Rainier and multiple lakes and rivers within our boundaries, additional duty assignments for patrol deputies are available in Search and Rescue, Marine Services, and the Dive Team. PCSD also offers opportunities for Patrol Deputies in such areas as the SWAT Team, Hazardous Device Team, Special Investigations Unit, Community Support Team, Gang Unit and Clandestine Lab Team.

As a corrections deputy, you will work in the housing units or you can serve as a Booking Deputy, Central Control Operator, Court Escort, Training Deputy or Classifications Specialist. Our corrections deputies hold a limited commission and are armed.
