When you are the victim of a crime, emotions can be overwhelming. You may feel violated, helpless or frustrated. Sometimes, it is difficult to figure out what you need to do to recover from the loss.

This page is designed to assist with picking up the pieces after a crime. No matter what type of crime, this page has information about what to do and who to contact.

Crime victims residing in Pierce County now have the opportunity to report minor crimes online through the Online Crime and Lost Property Reporting system. This feature is not to report emergencies, in-progress crimes or previously reported crimes.

The online report system is designed to document crimes without suspect information or evidence. Only the following types of reports may be reported through the online system:

1. Lost Property (except guns, passports, military ID, etc.)
2. Vandalism (except vehicle collisions or hit and runs)
3. Stolen Property/Theft (except vehicles, license plates or guns)

If any of the following applies to your incident, do not report your crime through the Online Crime and Lost Property Reporting system:

1. The crime is an emergency or is in-progress.
2. You have suspect information.
3. The incident includes motor vehicles, license plates or guns.
4. There was an injury to a person.
5. The incident involved other crimes not listed above.
6. There was a witness to the crime.
7. The incident occurred outside of unincorporated Pierce County.

If you are unable to use the Online Crime and Lost Property Reporting feature, you must call the non-emergency number at 253-798-4721, option 1. If you have a crime which fits the criteria to report online, you can proceed to the Online Crime and Lost Property Reporting.

• A copy of the affidavit you filed with the financial institution(s) involved with the transaction(s)
• A copy of the check(s) involved in the transaction(s)
• Copies of any additional documentation to support your claim a crime has been committed against you.

Create a list of everything taken during the incident and attempt to document the serial numbers and damage to the items. This information helps law enforcement to identify your item from hundreds of items which may be similar. Document this information on the theft inventory sheet(s).

If you do not have record of the serial number in your home, check with the manufacturer of the item or the store where you made your purchase. Some companies keep track of the serial numbers for warranty records. If you have paperwork from previous repairs made to the unit, the serial number is sometimes documented on the paperwork.

If the suspect meets any of the following criteria, you qualify for a domestic violence protection order. You may file a petition at either the Gig Harbor Civic Center or the County-City Building.

1. Your spouse or former spouse
2. The person with whom you have a child in common
3. Persons related to you by blood or marriage
4. Persons currently or previously living with you
5. Persons currently or previously in a dating relationship with you

If the suspect does not fit the above criteria, you will need to file for an anti-harassment order. These are only available through the County-City Building.

Once you file your petition with the court, a court date will be set for approximately two weeks from your filing date. You will be given a copy of the paperwork for your records and a copy for service to the respondent in your order. You will need to have the paperwork served to the respondent before the court date.

There are also other resources available to domestic violence victims. These resources are listed in the Pierce County Sheriff's Office Victim's Rights brochure, available below. You may have received a copy of this brochure from a deputy responding to your domestic violence incident. In an attempt to keep the file sizes low, the brochure has been divided into four parts.

If you were involved in a motor vehicle collision and local law enforcement officers did not respond to the incident, you may need to fill out a State of Washington Vehicle Collision Report.

The operator or owner of any vehicle involved in a collision within Washington in which any person is injured, including one's self, or in which any person's property sustains damages in the amount of $700.00 or more is required to complete the vehicle collision report.

Keep a copy of the report for yourself. Your insurance company may request a copy of the accident report to process any claim filed by you or the other driver(s) involved in the collision.
