What are the various positions in the Forensic Investigation Section?
There are three different positions within the Forensic Investigation Section:
- Office Assistants
- Forensic Technicians
- Forensic Investigators
While all three positions are filled through the Pierce County Civil Service testing process, each have different qualifications.
What type of person does the Sheriff's Department seek as a Forensic Investigator?
The Sheriff's Department has three different experience levels they seek:
- The first is the person who currently employed as a Forensic Investigator with at least five years of experience. This is considered the lateral entry level.
- The second level is the person who is currently employed as a Forensic Investigator with at least two years but less than five years of experience. This person would be required to take the standard entry level civil service test for the Forensic Investigator position.
- Finally, the Sheriff has the option to seek candidates for training.
However, not just anyone has the ability to become a Forensic Investigator Trainee. The candidate must have completed two years of college level course work in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science, and who is task and detail oriented. The trainee is then given 1500 hours of training, both formal and crime scene, before they can take the Forensic Investigator entry level practical and written examinations. After completing the training and the testing procedures, the new employee is placed into a probationary status for yet another year. At the conclusion of nearly two years of training the Investigator is ready to respond to any scene with confidence, dedication, and ability to obtain whatever evidence there is to be found.
