A new volunteer unit was formed in October of 2000 to enforce compliance with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. A Parking Enforcement Volunteer Unit was established. The unit patrols the unincorporated areas of Pierce County on an unscheduled basis both days and evenings.
Each of the volunteers are given authority under the provisions of Washington State Law and commissioned through the Sheriff's Department to write tickets for vehicles illegally parked in spaces reserved for Disabled Persons. These violations carry a fine of $250. Persons with Disabled Parking permits are encouraged to display them as required on the rear view mirror or on the dashboard of their vehicle. Please help us help our Disabled Citizens by reporting violations of a specific area or business that may have repeat offenders.
If you have a suggestion concerning Disabled Parking Enforcement, such as a particular location where you observe repeated violations, or a chronic violator where you work or shop, please call the unit at (253) 798-3883 and leave a complete message. Although limited time precludes the staff from returning each call, we want you to know that each complaint will be investigated.
