Wastewater Collection and Pump Station System
The wastewater collection system provides sewer service to households and businesses in the cities of Lakewood, University Place, Steilacoom, Milton, Dupont, Fife, Tacoma, and unincorporated areas of the County including Spanaway, Parkland, Brown's Point, South Hill, Frederickson and Graham.
The Sewer Service Area includes the above areas and the entire Urban Growth Area (UGA) as established by the Pierce County Comprehensive Plan. This plan, adopted in 1994, established two basic types of zoning, Urban and Rural. Urban based zoning is all located within the County's UGA. It is within this UGA that all new sewer construction and extension currently exists. Extension of sewer services into Rural areas of Pierce County is not allowed by state and county ordinances.
Pierce County's Sewer Service Area includes:
- 658 miles of sewer pipelines*
- 95 individual pumping stations*
- 825 residential grinder pumps*
- 15,964 service manholes*
Wastewater Collections staff constantly monitor the condition of the sewer system using radio telemetry and alarm systems. They maintain the system and respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day at (253) 565-3440.
