The Sewer Utility provides wastewater management, collection, and treatment services to large urban areas of Pierce County. To deliver these services, the County owns and operates infrastructure assets that include a network of underground pipelines, pump stations, maintenance manholes, and the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The foundation of the utility infrastructure was installed in the 1980's to protect groundwater resources and public health through Utility Local Improvement Districts or ULID's, the first being ULID 73-1. Initial funding was provided through a combination of federal, state, and local sources. Since then, Pierce County has continued to expand the sewer system to respond to new urban growth through a user pay system of improvements. The Sewer Utility does not receive assistance from the Pierce County General Fund - the Utility is owned and supported solely by the rate payers.

Providing service to existing and future customers relies upon effectively managing the investments, both existing and future, to best meet the customer's needs and expectations. As the sewer system infrastructure ages, improvements will be made in maintenance, repair, and refurbishment to manage the Utility's costs. In this manner Pierce County will continue to strive to deliver cost-effective, environmentally sound sewer services to all of its rate payers.
