In order to provide such crucial services, it is vital to road operations that maintenance facilities are up to standard providing a reliable space for necessary employees, vehicles, tools, and road gear for emergencies.
Pierce County's current road maintenance facilities need improvements. To address this need, Pierce County staff assessed the condition of current facilities and conducted a cost benefit analysis to determine the best course of actions to meet the needs. The analysis concluded that the most efficient model would include the construction of a centralized 'headquarters' facility, and the use of smaller 'satellite' road shops located strategically to support routine road maintenance needs. Further, it was determined that a centralized facility could be built more economically than making improvements at each existing road shop.
The new Central Maintenance Facility (CMF) will provide one central location for increased operational and safety efficiencies, employee productivity, accountability, team-building and communication between the public works divisions. In addition, the new CMF will provide a public meeting space and interpretive and educational opportunities.
The new CMF design uses sustainable 'green' strategies such as low impact development practices for stormwater management, paving, energy, and water conservation systems.
