Vacation Leave

Upon completion of 13 pay cycles (approximately six months) employees receive six days of vacation leave. Vacation accrues according to the following schedule:

Accruable Years Days Vacation Per Year
1st through 3rd year 12 days
4th through 7th year 16 days
8th through 13th year 20 days
14th through 18th year 23 days
19th year 24 days
20th year 25 days
21st year 26 days
22nd year 27 days
23rd year 28 days
24th year 29 days
25th and thereafter 30 days

A maximum of 45 days may be carried over from one year into the next.


Employees receive six days of sick leave upon completion of 13 pay cycles (approximately six months). Sick leave is accrued at the rate of one day per month.


Pierce County employees enjoy ten paid holidays.

Regular full-time and regular part-time employees shall also receive two additional paid 'personal' holidays. Each paid personal holiday shall accrue on January 1st of each year and must be taken during the calendar year in which it was accrued.


Employees and families may select from four medical plans customized for Pierce County employees. All plans include vision and pharmacy benefits.

Eligible dependents are covered at no additional charge. Pierce County pays a major portion of the monthly insurance premium for full-time employees. Part-time employees are offered these benefits with a pro-rated premium.


Employees and families may select from two dental plans customized for Pierce County employees. Both plans include orthodontia for adults and children.

Eligible dependents are covered at no additional charge. Pierce County pays the entire monthly insurance premium for full-time employees. Part-time employees are offered these benefits with a pro-rated premium.


Pierce County pays the monthly insurance premiums for life insurance for all full-time/full-benefit employees is effective the first day of employment. Additional life insurance is available at the employee's expense.


Eligible Pierce County employees participate in retirement programs administered by the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). The Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) covers the majority of County employees. Commissioned law enforcement employees participate in the Law Enforcement Officers' and Fire Fighters' Retirement System (LEOFF). Employees and the County contribute jointly to the plans. Employees are covered by Social Security and the State Industrial Insurance Act.


Pierce County also offers its employees additional valuable benefits.
