Mission:

The Aaron Pointer Sportsmanship of the Year Award promotes high standards of achievement, attitude and ethics in athletics.

Eligibility:

This award is open to youths participating in sport activities from any amateur level that is provided by local government park and recreation agencies and non-profit athletic organizations. One male and female sportsmanship award will be granted each year. To be eligible, athletes must be ages 17 and younger who perform individually or on a team. Athletes must participate in a sport and live within Pierce County.

Selection Process:

The selection is based on the following criteria:

  • Participation in sport(s)
  • Attitude and Effort
  • Leadership Abilities
  • Dedication and Enthusiasm
  • Special Attributes or Circumstances

The selection committee, consisting of parks and recreational professionals will announce the winners.

Awards:

The winners will receive a personalized recognition plaque, their name plates mounted on the Hall of Fame plaque, and an announcement on the Pierce County Parks and Recreation website. In addition, the award winners' names will be published in the Parks and Recreation Activity Guide. Public service announcements will also be submitted to the major papers of Pierce County and the recipients' schools.

Submiting a Nomination:

Coaches, league administrators, parks and recreation staff members, media and/or the public may nominate an athlete. Each nomination must include the athlete's name, age, sport, along with their significant attributes using the award's criteria. Nominations are accepted yearly from October 15-June 15.

Aaron Pointer
A Man for All Seasons

Aaron Pointer is a long-standing resident and parks and recreation professional of Pierce County. His career began with Pierce County Parks and Recreation in March of 1971, devoting 29 years to supervising and coordinating countywide recreation programs with the specialty of athletic programming. As a Recreation Supervisor, Aaron established and administered hundreds of league and tournament competitions, including youth and adult football, baseball, slowpitch, basketball, soccer, and volleyball.

Pointer worked extensively with community organizations, schools, busnesses, and news media helping to engage participation in public parks and recreation. Aaron currently serves as a Park Board Member for MetroParks Tacoma.

Prior to graduation from McClymond High School, Aaron was an all star high school basketball player, as well as the Student Body President for the Class of 1959. He was awarded a full basketball scholarship to the University of San Francisco. In 1961, Aaron signed a National League Baseball contract with the Houston Colt 45 as a first baseman. His Topps NLB card was issued in 1967. Aaron was known as one of the first to hit a home run inside the Astro Dome. Aaron continued playing for the Tacoma Cubs in 1968-69 before signing with the Nishitetsu Lions of Fukuoka, Japan. He ended his professional baseball career in 1971.

Aaron became a PAC 10 Football Official in 1978, serving 9 years. In 1987, he was hired as a National Football League Official where he was Head Linesman No. 79. Throughout his NFL official career, Aaron has officiated preseason games in Germany and Japan, league games, and a number of Playoff and Pro-Bowl games. Aaron retired from the National Football League Official in 2003.
