The Juvenile Division, led by Chief Deputy Fred Wist, is responsible for handling felony and misdemeanor cases involving youth under the age of eighteen. The Division handles all cases arising throughout Pierce County. In 2008 over 5,700 cases were reviewed for charges and almost 2,500 prosecuted.
We aggressively prosecute the most serious offenders, who are occasionally 'declined' to adult court for prosecution and imprisonment in the adult criminal justice system. However, we also place a strong emphasis on rehabilitating young offenders to prevent recidivism and refer many cases involving lower level crimes to Diversion.
This Division also enforces the truancy laws and works closely with local schools and parents to encourage youth to attend school. Over 1000 truancy case are filed annually. |
