The Importance of foot care

The importance of proper foot care increases as we age. Professional foot care services help maintain mobility and independence. Services typically include:

Soaking feet for 5-10 minutes
Cleaning around cuticles and under nails
Trimming and filing of toenails;
Buffering of corns and calluses;
Applying lotion;
Monitoring of foot problems with an emphasis on the challenges related to diabetes and poor circulation.

Patients with more serious problems are referred to their family physician or a podiatrist.

Foot care is provided by two different organizations: Catholic Communty Services and Senior Footcare (Nancy Betschart, LPN), a nonprofit organization and a private business specializing in diabetic foot care, respectively.

Priority Footwear is an authorized Medicare/Medicaid provider. Medicare / Medicaid pays 80% of the cost of the shoes and inserts for diabetics annually. Supplemental insurance may cover the other 20%, so in most cases the shoes are at no cost to the patient. Handles all the paper work for the patient including communicating with the doctor regarding the specific needs and the required approvals. Does custom orthotics, shoes and specializes in wide and narrow foot shoes. Priority Footwear is an Accredited Facility of the American Board of Certification.
