The Human Resources Department provides a wide range of human resource management functions for all County departments and administers a comprehensive merit-based personnel management system. The Human Resources Department was established in accordance with Article 7 of the Pierce County Charter. Activities can generally be classified into these functional areas:

  • General Administration - maintains the personnel management system and the Administrative Guidelines for the Career Service, manages the operations of the department, and oversees compliance with legislated requirements and the Personnel Board.
  • Employment and Compensation - increases public awareness and participation in Pierce County employment through advertising, targeted recruitment programs and employment services; and administers the classification and compensation plan.
  • Civil Service Commission for Sheriff's Department Employees - is responsible for administration of personnel policies and practices subject to the provisions of the State statute and local Rules and Regulations.
  • Organizational Development & Training - provides programs to include employees in the organization's decision making process, update educational and proficiency levels, improve productivity and strengthen internal communications.
  • Employee/Labor Relations
  • Administrative Support - administers employee benefit programs, conducts new employee orientations, and provides clerical support for the department.
