Teen driver pleads guilty, sentenced on vehicular homicide charge

TACOMA, WA – Today the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office accepted a plea agreement from Bryson Andrrew Stubbles, 19. Stubbles was charged with one count of vehicular homicide for the death of Paco Frees, 18, and three counts of vehicular assault. Frees was a passenger in Stubbles' vehicle and was killed when Stubbles crashed into a tree while driving under the influence last October.

There were five passengers in the vehicle. Stubbles was behind the wheel. Frees was the front seat passenger and died as a result of the crash. Three others were injured.

“Drinking and driving poses a danger to everyone on the road,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist.

On October 2, 2016, at approximately 2:38 a.m., Washington State Patrol Troopers responded to a report of a car versus tree crash on State Route 410 near Greenwater.

Troopers responded to the scene of the crash and talked to Stubbles in the back of an aid car. They could smell an overwhelming odor of alcohol, and Stubbles admitted drinking a Steel Reserve 211, and three shots of rum. He also reported smoking marijuana earlier in the day.

Stubbles told Troopers he was driving and leaned to his right to hear a conversation. He said that caused the vehicle to veer right and when he corrected, Stubbles says, he hit a pothole, lost control and hit the tree.

Stubbles was sentenced to six years in prison.

“My heart goes out to you. It really, really does,” said the victim’s father Ryan Hills at sentencing. “If I could let you walk right now I would. But, the law is the law. Go in there, do your time, and get out.”
